Let us first take a look at what semen is made of and how it is produced.  Follow the diagram below for the location of the male reproduction organs and structures.

The making of semen

Basic ingredients: sperm cells, testicle fluid (5%), seminal fluid (60%), prostate fluid (30%) and Cowper’s gland fluid (5%)

The following describes each organ that takes part in the making of the semen cocktail, in the order the sperm travels through the body on its way out.

  1. Testicles
    Produce sperm cells and hold them until they are mature (takes 2-3 months). Once mature, sperm cells leave the testicles and enter your epididymis.
     
  2. Epididymis
    This is a coiled tubular organ attached to your testicles. It stores the mature sperm cells where they learn to swim while waiting for your next sexual activity (masturbation or intercourse). During sex your testicles swell and some liquid is added to the sperm cells. The mixture is then moved into your vas deferens.   5. Prostate Gland
    Doughnut shaped gland located below the bladder. It secretes a thin, milky, alkaline fluid, called the prostate fluid. During ejaculation the sperm mixture passes through the prostate gland and this fluid is added to it. Prostate fluid accounts for about 30% of the total semen.
     
  6. Cowper’s Glands
    Two small glands the size of a pea that secrete a clear slippery mucous fluid better known as pre-ejaculate or pre-cum. It accounts for about 5% of the volume. (The liquid is secreted upon sexual stimulation, not just during ejaculation. Upon prolonged sexual stimulation the amount of pre-cum can sometimes surpass the total amount of semen.)  In texture and color it is very similar to the clear slippery secretions from a woman’s vagina.
