Easy meals with a rice cooker

A rice cooker is a great piece of kitchen equipment to use. They can help you easily prepare some great tasting meals. Of course this type of appliance is primarily used for cooking rice. But this is not its only use. It can be used as a steamer and therefore can cook almost anything you are willing to try with it. The first time you try something it may not turn out great but the more you experiment with a rice cooker the better you will become at it.

Firstly though I shall discuss simply cooking plain rice in a rice steamer. There is a rice cooker in every Japanese household. This is the food that forms the basis of their diets. The most popular machine is a Zojirushi rice cooker. They make all kinds of kitchen appliances like toasters and bread making machines. But their good reputation stems from them being the number one rice cooker manufacturer in Japan. These machines are now easily available in the West so this is I why I want to introduce them to you. When you cook with a rice cooker, it is all about the preparation. Firstly you want to be using the best rice that you can find. It may be hard to get Japanese rice outside of Japan but this is the optimum. Particularly brands that are from the northern part of the country are recognized as being amongst the best the country has to offer. Secondly it is important to wash the rice completely. This removes the excess starch from the rice and ensures that it will not become a sticky mess. Ideally you want it to stick together but not as one big lump. Each grain needs to retain its own shape. Then once you have prepared your rice all you have to do is pop it into the cooker and then turn it on. That is all. This is the genius of rice cookers, they can be left to do the cooking for you. This makes them great for students, busy people and lazy people alike!

But plain rice by itself is possibly a little bit boring. That is why you may want to use your rice cooker for all sorts of different things. But that is the subject for another article. A Japanese rice cooker may be just what you need.
